M1 traffic alert for barrier repairs

MOTORISTS are being warned of disruption on the M1 near Rotherham during work to replace the steel barrier on the central reservation.

The Highways Agency says that a 50mph speed restriction will be put in place between junctions 31 at Aston and 33 Catcliffe from next Monday until March 18.

Three narrowed lanes will be in operation every day, but overnight closures may be required.

A new concrete barrier is being installed at Junction 32 at Thurcroft.

Project manager, Tim Calvert, said: "This barrier replacement scheme will improve safety on the M1 in South Yorkshire. Concrete barriers reduce the risk of vehicles involved in accidents crossing from one side of the motorway to the other and improve the safety of road users and road workers.

"To minimize the disruption to drivers, three lanes will remain open in each direction during the day. During the work a 50mph speed limit will be in place to ensure the safety of road users and our workforce.

"During the work we advise road users to plan their journeys to avoid delays. And for the safety of drivers and roadworkers we encourage all drivers to drive carefully past the work site, keeping within the speed limit, and concentrating on the road ahead."
