The section of motorway north of junction 31 was closed to traffic and was expected to stay shut for some time.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “The incident happened at around 11.30am just after the junction 31 exit slip road.

“The incident has resulted in the northbound carriageway being blocked by damaged vehicles which need to be removed.

“Specialist recovery is at the scene clearing a shed load and working to secure a load which is in danger of spilling from one of the vehicles.

“Diesel fuel has also spilled across the carriageway and needs to cleared away and the carriageway inspected for damage.

“Although the carriageway is closed from junction 31 because of the location of the incident between junction slip roads, an ‘up and over’ diversion is in place, with drivers able to leave the motorway at junction 31 and rejoin it via the junction roundabout.”
