Mr Aspinall said: “Someone came into my shop and threw some type of acid in my face.

“Luckily I’m OK. The police and ambulance have attended and stated if I had not acted so quickly and diluted it with water then things could have been a lot worse.

“This was obviously a personal attack as they did not go for the till or any possessions.”

As reported previously, Mr Aspinall and his partner Luke Hudson were forced to move out of their Thurnscoe home of two years because of fears for their safety and homophobic abuse.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said it was not known what the substance was but it is not believed to be acid.

She said: “The shop owner received minor injuries in the incident.”

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to report it via 101 quoting incident number 325 of March 21.
