Light a candle for a relative . . . and Rotherham Hospice

SUPPORTERS of a Rotherham charity are being invited to light a candle in memory of their loved ones.

The Rotherham Hospice is preparing for one of its most poignant occasions which sees lights dedicated as a celebration of life.

This year’s Light up a Life candlelit ceremony will take place at Talbot Lane Methodist Church on December 5. There will be two services this year at 3.30pm and 6pm.

Louise Johnson, community fund-raiser said: “The Light up a Life Ceremony is a

beautiful and sensitive service of readings and songs which brings us together to

collectively remember our loved ones over the festive season.

“Your kind donation will allow us to continue caring for the hundreds of local people in need of our special care each year.”

Through the appeal, supporters can make a donation and inscribe their names in the Book of Lights.

Supporters are asked to fill in an application form to let the hospice team know which name to inscribe in the special book which will be available to view at the hospice during December and into early January.

A personalised dedication card will be sent to all those taking part.

One supporter who attended last year’s ceremony said: “Special times such as Christmas and New Year are always difficult as that is the time when I think of my mum as well as other friends and relatives who are no longer here.

“The service is such a lovely experience with the choir, the poems, the songs and most of all the lighting of the candles which gives a poignant glow to the faces of everyone around me.

“When life is so busy it is so easy to lose time for reflection but by attending the Light up a Life Ceremony it made it so easy to pause to consider the lives and memories of everyone who was special to me.”

The hospice will soon be able to support up to 14 in-patients at any one time through the newly built extension.

This means it will cost in the region of £3 million per year to run the hospice.
