Labour's Dan Jarvis elected first South Yorkshire regional mayor

LABOUR’S Dan Jarvis has been elected the first mayor of Sheffield City Region.

Mr Jarvis — MP for Barnsley Central since 2011 — won 47.99 per cent of the first choice vote.

Turnout was just 25.82 per cent across South Yorkshire, with four out of five people in Rotherham not turning out to vote.

The number of total first preference votes given for each candidate was:

ALLEN David Stewart – English Democrats – ” A Parliament for England!” –  14,547

BOWER Mick – The Yorkshire Party – 22,318

JARVIS Dan – Labour and Co-Operative Party –  122,635

JUDAH Naveen – South Yorkshire Save Our NHS – 10,837

KITCHING Hannah Ruth – Liberal Democrats – 27,146

MURPHY Robert – Green Party Candidate –  20,339

WALKER Ian Geoffrey – The Conservative Party Candidate – 37,738

Total number of second preference votes cast for the remaining candidates:

JARVIS Dan – Labour and Co-Operative Party – 21,519 – Total – 144,154 (ELECTED)

WALKER Ian Geoffrey – The Conservative Party Candidate – 12,881 – Total  – 50,619

Winner Mr Jarvis visited the University Centre Rotherham, currently under construction at Doncaster Gate and part-funded by SCR, during his election campaign.

He said: “It shows how by working together, and taking decisions locally rather than relying on the Government in London, we can create jobs and secure the investment that we need. 

“I want to champion schemes like the UCR but also keep banging the drum to get South Yorkshire the resources that we need to build a stronger, fairer economy in the future.”
