Knifeman caged for killing partner

A man suffering from mental illnesses who “savagely” stabbed his long-term partner to death with a kitchen knife will be detained in a psychiatric hospital indefinitely.

Gordon White (47) denied murdering Cheryl Ann Martin (44) but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

An assessment of his mental health concluded that he had a severe mental disorder including delusions and paranoia.

Ms Martin died from more than 20 stab wounds at the couple’s home on Stag Lane in Broom last October.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that White suffered from depression brought about by an eye disease which left him virtually blind but for peripheral vision.
