Keep chimneys clean to avoid fires—advice

FIRE bosses are this week reminded residents about the importance keeping their chimneys clean.

As part of Chimney Fire Safety Week, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have told people to book registered chimney sweeps before the harsh winter sets in.

The authority have joined forces with The National Association of Chimney Sweeps and The Guild of Master Sweeps to urge householders to book their appointments now.

“To keep yourself and your family safe from fire you should take care to have your chimney swept regularly, depending upon what fuel you burn, before the colder winter months set in and you begin to use your fire and chimneys again,” said Steve Makepeace, head of community safety.

“If the worst should happen, a smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape in a house fire. Make sure you test yours regularly.”
