The BBC motormouth and his television crew closed off a section of Doncaster Road, Braithwell, for more than an hour as they overturned the three-wheel car in front of mesmerised locals yesterday morning.

They later headed to Brookhouse’s idyllic cricket ground to gatecrash a game ... with the Reliant roaring over the boundary to interfere with proceedings with another spectacular roll.

Luckily, former Test match umpire Harold “Dickie” Bird was in town to shoo away the Top Gear star.

But despite a reprimand from the cricketing icon, an all-action Clarkson was keen to step out from behind the wheel of his three-wheeled steed to catch up with the Advertiser team.

He said: “It’s great to see a copy of the newspaper. It’s where I started out, after all.

“We’re up here filming a piece about the Robin. They were very popular in the North so we decided to head for Rotherham.”

Dickie Bird had taken time out from a holiday in Scarborough to visit Brookhouse.

He said: “I only got an invitation last week but as it’s local I thought I’d come along. Brookhouse has a lovely ground.
