Insulation scheme backed by cash offer

ROTHERHAM residents are being encouraged to tap into a scheme offering free insulation—and cash.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, loft insulation can save homes £175 a year on energy bills, while cavity wall insulation can save £135 a year.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change estimates that nearly half of Britain’s homes do not have adequate basic insulation, with only 57 per cent of Britain’s lofts properly insulated and only 58 per cent of cavity walls filled.

Now John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne, is calling on people to take part in the ‘Share the Warmth’ scheme being run by British Gas.

People can refer their friends, relatives and neighbours who are on selected qualifying benefits, and the referred person will get free insulation and £50 to help with their energy bills.

The referrer will also be paid £50 for every person they refer to British Gas, which will be paid upon completion of installation - and there is no limit on the number of people that one person can refer.

Jon Kimber, managing director of British Gas New Energy, said: “With household budgets stretched we know that people are looking at ways to save money.

“About £1 in every £4 spent on heating is wasted due to poor insulation, so energy efficiency can have a massive impact.

“We want to get people looking out for others who need help.”

To qualify as a vulnerable customer and be eligible for the deal, the referred person must be in receipt of Pension Credit, in receipt of Child Tax Credit with an annual income below £16,190, or be on selected income-related benefits.

Neither the referrer nor the person receiving the installation is required to be a British Gas customer to qualify for the deal.

Mr Healey applauded the scheme, saying: “Energy bills are adding to the pressure on families who are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of living rises.

“Insulation can save households hundreds of pounds a year and most energy companies will do this for free. But the most in need are often the least likely to come forward to get help.

“That’s why I’m backing this offer. We can all do our bit to make sure that our friends and family are getting the help available in these difficult times to make their homes warmer.”

If you are interested in referring someone, tell that person about the Share the Warmth scheme, and give them your address and phone number.

The qualifying person should then call British Gas on 0800 9751195, book in the insulation installation, and remember to give your details as the referrer.
