Hunt for knifeman cabbie draws a blank

EVERY taxi firm in Rotherham has been visited by police hunting a driver suspected of stabbing a passenger in a late-night attack.

But officers have so far failed to identify the driver shown in this e-fit, who allegedly inflicted wounds to an 18-year-old’s leg after a fare dispute.

It is believed the cabbie used a screwdriver, key or other implement to stab the teenager in the back of his left leg, near his buttock.

The alleged victim and his friend got into a taxi close to the nightclub Pop in Rotherham town centre at around 2.35am on Friday, June 3.

They asked to be taken to Rossington in Doncaster and how much the fare would be. They agreed a price of £28 and paid £30 up front to the taxi driver.

As the pair left the taxi on arriving in Lansbury Avenue, Rossington at 3.15am the driver allegedly asked for £40.

Having already paid, the two men ignored the driver and began to walk away.

The driver got out of his taxi and allegedly stabbed the 18-year-old man in the top of his leg, got back into the taxi and drove away.

A police spokeswoman said: “We believe he was a legitimate taxi driver. The two men did not pre-book the taxi. They got into the cab as they left the nightclub.

“But having been to all taxi companies in Rotherham no-one has been identified, which is why we are appealing for help.”

The taxi driver is described as being of Asian appearance and in his late 20s to early 30s. He is approximately 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins tall, of stocky build with long, straight dark hair, about an inch past his ears, with a fringe styled diagonally from left to right, covering his forehead. He also has a full beard including moustache.

His car is believed to be a white saloon type vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020 quoting incident number 152 of June 3.
