Hotel fire: man charged with arson

A MAN has been charged with arson in connection with a blaze at a Rotherham hotel which took firefighters 12 hours to put out.

Lee Andrew Biggs was arrested on Saturday after fire tore through The Station Hotel, Station Road, Masbrough.

Around 16 residents had to be evacuated after fire broke out in one of the bedrooms and spread into the building’s roof space shortly before 4am.

Firefighters carried out an extensive search for one resident who was later found to have spent the night away from the hotel.

They were later forced to leave the building as the roof began to collapse.

Police arrested Biggs, who was staying at the hotel, was arrested shortly after the incident and appeared at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He was remanded in custody and his case was transferred to Sheffield Crown Court where he will appear on December 6.
