Historic artefacts on show at Mexborough’s “right royal” event

THIS amazing photo of Mexborough thronged with people is one of the historic artefacts on show at a right royal event next week.

The 1912 royal visit to the town by King George V will be the subject of a talk by historian Bill Lawrence at Mexborough and District Heritage Society’s February meeting next Wednesday, February 22.

Bill said: “Just prior to the First World War, Britain was embroiled in bitter political and industrial unrest.

“In 1912 the coalfields of the north had just emerged from the first national miners’ strike when it was decided it would be expedient to organise a royal visit to the industrial West Ridings of Yorkshire.

“The visit was to give King George V the opportunity to meet ‘ordinary’ working people and view their workplaces.

“The talk attempts to give an insight into the visit and, through a series of photographs, trace the King and Queen’s progress of their short stay in the region.”

The talk starts at 7.15pm at the Concertina Band Club, in Dolcliffe Road, Mexborough.

Entry is £1.50 for members and £2.50 for non-members.
