HOUSEHOLDERS in Rotherham hit by flash flooding this year could be eligible for a grant after borough councillors agreed to set up a bad weather payment scheme.

If the necessary criteria is met, households across the borough who were flooded in June could each receive compensation of up to £500 as a one-off payment to help towards the replacement of damaged goods.

Members of Rotherham Borough Council's Cabinet agreed to set up the scheme after hearing that about 175 properties across the borough suffered from localised flooding on June 9 this year.

The flash flooding affected residential properties, council buildings including schools and public highways as well as numerous gardens, open spaces and land.

The authority is currently writing to everyone who might have been flooded informing them of the payment and asking for proof that they meet the criteria.
