Harriers mark a superb campaign

IT'S been another excellent year for Rotherham Harriers — underlined at their annual awards night.

Held at the Trades and Labour club, athletes and officials gathered to celebrate their achievements, particularly in cross country and road racing, with 160 awards being presented to those who played a significant part in the many team successes enjoyed through the year.

Highlights of the year individually were the achievements of Leo Rowley, ranked third in the UK at U15 boys' shot put, Emma Dutton, ranked third in the UK at U20 women's half marathon, and Natasha Hatswell, who is fourth nationally in the 2000m steeplechase.

The Senior Ladies team once again competed successfully at the highest level and retained local, county and North of England titles as well as gaining the club's first-ever medal at national cross country level.

The Senior Men, U15 boys and U13 girls also enjoyed great success with county championship wins.

Two of the main awards for the evening reflected the hard work put into achieving such a consistent level of performance, as the male and female club members of the year prizes were presented to Peter Shaw and Nicola Myers, two of the endurance coaches for the senior and intermediate athletes.

The most improved athlete of the year was awarded to Samantha Johnson for her performances on the track at all distances from 400m to 3000m and the part she played in the senior ladies team success.
