Gang member caged for 'staggering' metal bar attack on woman

A GANG member who attacked a woman with a metal bar has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years.

Scott Daniel Fitzgerald (22) admitted assault and was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday.

Fitzgerald was a member of the Pitsmoor Shotta Boys, which has been operating in Mexborough, police said.

Nine others from the group were jailed earlier this month for a variety of criminal offences.

Fitzgerald, of Beaumont Mews, Manor, Sheffield, was involved in an attack on a 42-year-old woman in Oliver Street, Mexborough in the early hours of June 18, 2015.

A dog was set on her and she was hit several times with a metal bar, including in the face.

PC David Chadwick, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “This is another positive result for the Mexborough community and I hope residents are reassured by the continued action taken by police and partners to disrupt those individuals who think they are above the law.

“This assault was brutal and completely unprovoked. The level of violence this man inflicted on a woman is staggering and I am pleased he is now behind bars where he belongs.”

Fitzgerald was also handed a criminal behaviour order.
