Gang in bank raid bid

A GANG of would-be robbers tried to break into a South Yorkshire bank by knocking through the wall of an empty shop next door

The raiders set up in a former fruit and veg shop next to Lloyds bank in Wickersley, Rotherham before attempting their break-into the bank last Thursday.

The windows at the former Berry's greengrocers were sprayed  black so that no one could see them preparing for the break-in at the bank in Bawtry Road's Tanyard Shopping Centre.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said two men from Manchester, both in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on police bail.

She said the bank wall was damaged in the raid which took place between 5.45am on Thursday 8 and 5.45am on Friday April 9.
