Four-hour roof rescue closes Wellgate

EMERGENCY services were forced to close part of Wellgate in Rotherham town centre to rescue a man from a shop roof early today.

Police and firefighters were called shortly after 4.30am this morning after reports that a man was trapped somewhere above the Staniforths bakery and Bar One buildings.

They found a 23-year-old man who claimed to be injured.

Part of Wellgate was closed and the man was eventually brought down and taken to hospital at 8.40am.

An eyewitness said: “It was hard to tell what was happening because you couldn’t see past all the police and fire crews.

“One person said that they had seen a body being brought down.”

A police spokeswoman said that there had been no fatalities as a result of the incident but confirmed that officers would be launching an investigation into what the man was doing on the shop roof in the early hours of the morning.

The road has now been re-opened.
