Floored Millers look to recover

ROTHERHAM United will aim to collect the points needed to guarantee their Championship survival after the international break — and put behind them a shattering defeat to old rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Leading 2-1 with three minutes to go of normal time, the Millers conceded twice in stoppage time to lose 3-2 in front of a stunned full house at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The result leaves them five points above third-bottom Wigan Athletic with seven matches to go. With no match this weekend, Rotherham resume their programme with two games in four days over Easter, the first away to Birmingham on Good Friday and the second at home to Brighton on Easter Monday.

And manager Steve Evans, who has seen his side lose three matches on the bounce, says they must take their latest defeat on the chin and move on.

He said: “Our chairman came down to the dressing room after the game and he has never been down in two-and-a-half years. He hugged me and nearly every one of the players and he felt for us.

“We're as down as we can be but thankfully we've got a little while to pick people up and go again. This international break will give us the chance to get players freshened up and ready for the last part of the season.”

Ben Pringle opened the scoring against Wednesday just before the hour mark and although Caolan Lavery netted an 86th minute equaliser, an immediate strike from Millers substitute Jordan Bowery seemed to have decided it.

The two late sucker punches from Atdhe Nuhiu and Kieran Lee turned the match on its head.

“There was no-one to blame but ourselves,” added Evans. “We have to defend much better if we want to win a football match.

“We got back in front and then gave two very sloppy goals away — one playerlost his man on the right side and another not tracking a runner and if you do that you get punished.”

The Millers team included two new loan signings in goalkeeper Emi Martinez from Arsenal and utlity man Lawrie Wilson from Charlton Athletic.
