Fish and computer lessons in classroom made of buses: VIDEO

THERE is something fishy about the novel way teachers at Swinton Community School are sowing the seeds of IT inspiration in their students minds.

Pupils will need a ticket to ride all the way to educational superstardom as they will now be taking classes in a classroom formed using a pair of disused buses.

The new aquaponics centre at Swinton Community School is the first of its kind in Rotherham.

Two buses were lifted into position by cranes and now form the IT suite and house some of the tanks where koi carp will be bred and plants will grow.

It was officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, David Moody.

Headteacher David Pridding said: “We wanted to make the centre something a little bit different and visually striking for students of all ages so that’s why we used the buses to create part of this exciting new development.

“This really adds to the fantastic breadth of learning we can offer to our students so we are delighted to be hosting the centre.

“We want to ensure that these new facilities don’t just benefit our students.

“The offer to use it and develop other learning opportunities will extend to all schools, not just in our community but from across Rotherham.”

As well as creating opportunities across the curriculum, the new centre will also offer fish breeding courses for students to learn more about the industry.

Funding for the project has come from external grants and sponsorship from fish specialists Evolution Aqua and Kitsu Koi.

Mr Pridding added: “This work will be self-funding and run as a business separate to the school, raising money through sponsorship and sales of the fish and plants that are nurtured here.”

launch event last week was a particularly significant event for one of the school’s sixth form students, Daniel Roberts.

Daniel accompanied the Lord Lieutenant on the official visit in his role as Lord Lieutenant Cadet, to which he was appointed in recognition of his outstanding service in the Air Training Corps.
