Firefighters called in to aid tip fire battle

FIRE crews from Maltby and Dearne were called to help colleagues dealing with a landfill site blaze in Doncaster.

A 60-sq metre area at the Veolia premises on Askern Road was set alight early yesterday.

Firefighters worked with site staff to create a fire break using a digger while using three jets of water.

Crews were damping down and preparing to leave at about 2.30pm after nine hours at the scene.

A fire service spokesman said: “No-one has been injured. The blaze is believed to have been started deliberately.”
