At least one of the firearms distributed by Shaun Michael May (33) was used in a shooting, police said.

May, of Castle Well in Conisbrough, admitted possession and conspiracy to transfer prohibited weapons.

The guns he passed into criminal circulation were modified by Anthony McIntyre (57), from Hatfield in Doncaster.

An inquiry into the pair’s enterprise began in 2016, when antique guns — adapted so they could fire modern ammunition — were recovered from an address in Conisbrough, a caravan site in Bentley and a property on Allerton Street, Doncaster.

McIntyre, of Main Street, admitted conspiracy to manufacture and transfer prohibited weapons and was also jailed for 14 years this morning (Monday).

Det Con Adrian Love said: “There is no doubt at all that by removing these firearms from circulation we have made Doncaster safer.

“After a lengthy investigation involving detailed and thorough examination of seized firearms and ammunition, we were able to identify a series of similarities between the modified firearms we had recovered.

“This allowed us to identify McIntyre, who would pass on his modified firearms to May to pass into wider criminal circulation.

“We know from our enquiries that at least one of the guns we recovered was used in a shooting incident in the Toll Bar area of Doncaster in November 2016, putting the safety of the public at significant risk.”

Det Con Love said the lengthy sentences given at Sheffield Crown Court showed that such offending would not be tolerated.

He encouraged anyone with information about armed criminality to report it anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
