Fire crews tackle Mexborough school blaze

Firefighters have prevented a school from being badly damaged in an arson attack after they came across it while at another incident.

A fire crew from Dearne station was attending a wheelie bin fire on Coniston Road in Mexborough at 12.45am today when they spotted a fire at the Mexborough Windhill Junior & Infants School on Hollingworth Close.

The firefighters along with a second crew from Dearne station, raced to the school and found a fire in an outside play area.

A spokesman said: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to quickly put the fire out.  

“A large amount of smoke had entered the building through a window.  “Firefighters ventilated the school and left the scene at 2.30am.

“The quick actions by the fire crews meant that the school was saved from any serious fire damage.

“The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.”
