Fines for drivers who used children's blue badges

TWO motorists were left with a £550 court bill each after using children’s blue badges illegally to park in Rotherham town centre.

Jamie Delerict (43), of Prospect Court, Parkgate, used the disabled pass in a pay and display space on Masbrough Street in January.

And Shazia Akhtar (39), of Broom Lane, was prosecuted for doing the same at a disabled bay at Drummond Street that same month.

The cases were heard by magistrates in Sheffield last Tuesday and both defendants were fined £220 and ordered to pay £300 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Cllr Denise Lelliott, Rotherham Borough Council’s cabinet member for jobs and the economy, said: “Using a blue badge fraudulently whilst the badge holder is not present is denying blue badge holders with genuine needs the opportunity to use a designated parking bay.

“Our officers are very alert to fraudulent use of blue badges and anyone using a blue badge in such a manner runs a high risk of being caught and prosecuted.”
