Fake cop cons woman, 88

A BOGUS caller posed as a policeman to steal a “large amount” of money from a pensioner.

The suspect was invited in by the 88-year-old woman when he approached her home in Milton Road, Mexborough, last Monday.

He wore a light coloured trilby hat and was between 40 and 50 years old.

Another incident in the same road was reported on January 20, when a man was going door-to-door selling household goods. He was described as between 40 and 50 years old and approximately 5ft 5ins tall.

Police are unsure if the incidents are linked but are keen to trace the seller to help with their enquiries.

Anybody that may have seen anything suspicious or recognise the description of either of the men is asked to contact Pc Lee Walker on 01142 202020.

A police spokesman said: “Distraction burglars often appear as bogus officials using convincing guises and appropriate dress, and commonly pose as representatives of utility services, such as gas or water suppliers.

“There will usually be two or more bogus callers, as one will aim to distract you while the other attempts to steal your property.

“If someone calls at your door without an appointment, ask to see their ID and check with their company before allowing them to enter.  Most organisations will set appointments rather than ‘cold calling’ at your door.”
