Excitement builds as Special Olympics torch passes through Rotherham

Torch-carrying runners passed through the town centre on Friday to mark the national games coming to South Yorkshire.

PC James Beck and Sgt Aneela Khalil-Khan carried the Flame of Hope before the games get underway with an opening ceremony at Sheffield United’s Bramall lane ground tomorrow (Tuesday).

Parklands Equestrian Centre in Aston will host the horse-riding events this week.

The Olympics will be the largest sports event to take place in the country for people with learning disabilities and 2,600 athletes will compete in a number of sports at venues across Rotherham and Sheffield.
