Evans calls for Millers Wembley send-off

The Millers chief was jubilant after his side booked their place in Sunday’s League One play-off final on Thursday with a 3-1 win at the New York Stadium against Preston North End, securing a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Supporters flooded onto the pitch after the final whistle and gathered in front of the West Stand to acclaim the celebrating players and manager.

There was another deluge to come, as fans have flocked to the Internet to buy tickets for the showpiece occasion, with more than 12,000 sold by yesterday.

This figure includes the 4,000 snapped up within the first hour of going on general sale yesterday morning.

While there will be no repeat of the grand public reception afforded Ronnie Moore’s Millers before the 2010 League Two play-off final, Evans said he would be delighted to see supporters gathering at the stadium on Saturday to wave off the team bus.

“The team will leave New York stadium en route for Wembley on Saturday at 2pm,” he said.

“I hope as many Millers supporters as possible can turn up and give the lads a good send off, everything will help and there will be no better sight for the players than leaving Rotherham surrounded by the fantastic Millers support.”

Evans said he was delighted to see people so firmly behind the team adding: “The buzz around the town is incredible, the excitement is building and everywhere I go I seem to see red and white flags or people in Wembley T-shirts.

“I’ve never seen so much red around the streets of Rotherham!”
