BRINSWORTH Comprehensive school art  teacher John Beardshall has lost his claim for unfair dismissal after being sacked while on sick leave.

An employment tribunal in Sheffield heard last month  that one of Mr Beadshall's lessons had been found to be "inadequate" after a spot inspection discovered that students had arrived late and did not appear to know what they were doing.

Mr Beardshall, who is in his 50s and comes from Barnsley, also missed deadlines for submitting pupils' work records and had spied on a newly-qualified teacher through a spyhole.

He had gone off ill after the inspection in 2008 and had never returned. He had been sacked for poor attendance on May 10 2009.

In a reserved decision, the tribunal rejected Mr Bearshall’s claims for unfair dismissal, disability discrimination and detriment through trade union activities.

Employment tribunal chairman Stephen Shore said: “This is a very unfortunate case."
