Election results - Red letter day for Labour

Young Dominic Beck (19) took the Wales ward vacancy left by Tory Gavin Sharp earlier this year in a dominant night for the ruling group.

Jenny Andrews narrowly edged out Brian Cutts by 88 votes in Hellaby and there were wins for Chris Read and Christine Beaumont in Wickersley and Maltby respectively.

Council Leader Roger Stone, who cruised to victory in Silverwood, described an “absolutely brilliant” night for Labour.

He said: “Dominic worked hard and won convincingly, we took three other wards so it’s been fantastic.

“There were 21 seats up for grabs and we won 20 of them.

“For us it highlights what a Labour stronghold Rotherham is and gives us the mandate to carry on what we have been doing.”

The borough council now comprises 54 Labour members, seven Tories, one BNP councillor and one Independent.
