Education secretary Justine Greening opens her former Rotherham school’s new £12m building

The Tory MP was shown around Oakwood High's new £12 million pound building by head teacher David Naisbitt and Year 11 pupils Will Monteiro and Safia Ajaib, the school's head boy and girl.

The new building on Moorgate was commissioned and built as part of the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme which aims to rebuild schools across the country that are in need of repair.

Ms Greening visited classrooms and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening during a ceremony in which she told pupils they were at a school that would help them become the best versions of themselves.

Ms Greening also thanked her former teachers who “inspired me to work hard and try hard and gave me a push when I needed it”.

Mr Naisbitt said: “It was nice having somebody visit who is of such status and standing on a national stage, who’s a Rotherham girl, a local girl, who comes from this community and is rooted in Rotherham.”
