Drivers caught in seatbelts blitz

MORE than 150 South Yorkshire drivers and passengers were caught without a seat belt in a week-long campaign by police.

The force’s Roads Policing Group also looked at safety issues like using a mobile phone while driving.

Chf Insp Stuart Walne said: “It’s disappointing that so many people were caught not wearing their seatbelt.

“It is such a simple action, if you are involved in a collision and are not wearing a seatbelt you are more likely to suffer serious injury or even death.”

The law states that the driver is responsible for all people under 14 in their vehicle. The maximum fine is £500.

The campaign was part of a European-wide Traffic Information System Police initiative between March 12 and 18.
