Driver used grandmother's disabled parking badge

A MAN who used his grandmother’s blue disabled parking badge in Rotherham town centre has been fined.

Michael Bowler (24), of Glencairn Close, Maltby, Rotherham, failed to appear at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge that he used his grandmother's disabled blue badge to park his vehicle in a designated disabled bay on Main Street, Rotherham, in August last year when his grandmother was not present.

Mr. Bowler was found guilty in his absence and ordered to pay a fine of £55 plus £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Another defendant, Peter Haywood (58), of Storey Street, Swinton, Rotherham, was convicted after being charged with using another person's blue badge to park his vehicle on Norfolk Street, Rotherham, in September last year when the badge holder was not present.

Mr Haywood was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of £135 plus £250 costs and the £15 victim surcharge.

Rotherham Borough Council's Parking Services Manager, Martin Beard, said: "These are more examples of illegal, antisocial parking activities which cause inconvenience for genuine holders of blue badges. We will continue to investigate suspected blue badge misuse and prosecute when appropriate."
