Dream well on the way to reality at new-look Maltby Academy

A SCHOOL’S long-awaited revamp hit the halfway mark with its proud principal comparing the new look to a university.

Maltby Academy’s outdated classrooms and buildings are being replaced with modern “learning spaces” under the £10.9 million project.

Work began last September after the academy — a business specialist school — was chosen for Government funding in 2010.

Principal Dave Sutton said: “Walking around the vast spaces with high ceilings, overhanging balconies and large glass sections, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a university atrium or a corporate business centre.

“We are already halfway through the building programme. We’ve seen spaces transformed with new windows, lighting, decoration and the very latest ICT equipment.

“Earlier this month we opened the doors to the new ‘new science’ area and the impressive performing arts spaces.

“For the first time I really think staff and students have been wowed and actually forgot what the old school used to look like.”

Mr Sutton said staff and pupils were now keen to see the flagship business and enterprise building finished.

He added: “It’s pleasing for me to see the vision start to become a reality.

“Everyone was excited to see the early visuals drawn by the architects but nothing compares to seeing the actual spaces in use and filled with Maltby students enjoying learning.

“We look forward to our partner schools, parents and community members having the opportunity to learn in these impressive spaces very soon.”
