Decision on Manvers waste plant operator

COUNCIL bosses have picked the company they want to run a massive waste plant to deal with Rotherham’s rubbish—but the winning bidder can not yet be named.

Councillors today backed an officers’ recommendation to choose either SITA Lend Lease and 3SE to build and run a new plant at Bolton Road, Manvers.

But the identity of the company winning the tender will not be revealed for at least a week until the end of a “call-in” period in which the decision can be challenged.

Meetings were held in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham today at which all three councils were presented with recommendations to back one of the bidders.

The decision still has to be approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The plant, which could house an incinerator, would deal with waste from all three towns as councils aim to slash the amount sent to landfill.
