Death of footballer prompts new appeal

Richard Fieldsend died on May 10 after a long battle with a heart condition.

The ex-semi-professional player had taken part in a campaign video for the British Heart Foundation to help fund research into a cure.

Now Richard, who lived in Eastwood, will be remembered with a charity match for the BHF between two teams of friends and relatives at the “Bag Inn” pitch next to Silverwood Miners’ Welfare on Saturday from 2pm.

Richard, who lived in Eastwood, was diagnosed with heart disease last year following a heart attack.

Meanwhile, a call has gone out for more volunteers as Rotherham’s Heart Town activities gather pace.

The British Heart Foundation is looking for anyone wanting to make a difference and help save lives.

Rotherham branch chairman June Thomas said: “We need more committee members and ambassadors, and we also need a large number of volunteers who enjoy helping on a one-off basis at events.”

Rotherham became a Heart Town in 2012, increasing the number of opportunities for raising awareness about heart health.

Now the branch needs to widen its circle of supporters with more work in schools and upcoming events like Circle of Hope and the Rotherham Show.
