Standing 24 points from the Championship safety line with eight games to play, they need a victory at home to Fulham to stand a chance of delaying the inevitable and even that may not be enough if Burton Albion, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City all avoid defeat.

Interim manager Paul Warne told the Advertiser: “I don’t think anyone is expecting us to win eight games and stay up on goals difference but everyone, myself included, has a right to expect a level of effort which is respectful of our club and our badge and hopefully we will turn in a performance which can send people away happy.”

If demotion back to League One is confirmed today, Warne promised that it wouldn’t harm the motivation of the players for Tuesday’s derby clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

He added: “It will still be disappointing if we get relegated but even if it happened this weekend it wouldn’t affect preparation for Tuesday or the following Saturday. We have to look at it as another chance to get some credit back.”

The fit-again Richard Wood, Darnell Fisher and Stephen Kelly are all back in contention.

Kick-off is 3pm and there will be a minute’s silence for former Millers boss Jim McAnearney, who died recently.
