Crime figures down, say police

SOUTH Yorkshire Police have urged Rotherham residents to speak up if crime issues in their area are not being addressed.

The call comes as the latest figures show a fall in crime in the county.

Vehicle crime, house burglaries and criminal damage are down, as well as violent crime including robbery.

Drugs and sex offences have risen compared with the previous 12 months, regional statistics to June show.

Knife and gun incidents are down and there have been fewer thefts, fraud and forgery.

Assistant Chf Con Andy Holt said: “The key for us is that people feel safe and are confident that we are dealing with the issues that matter in their area.

“These figures are great news for people in South Yorkshire but there can always be fewer victims of crime.

“If you think we’re not dealing with the main issues in your area, come and tell us.

“We hold monthly community meetings across the force where local people can tell the police and other organisations, such as the council, about the issues we should be dealing with. Once you’ve raised local issues then you can hold us to account at future meetings.”

He added: “Over the coming years, the police service will continually be asked to deliver more for less.

“This means that continuing to reduce crime will be difficult but we are committed to delivering cost-effective, quality policing.”

There was a 15 per cent reduction in reported crimes for the year ending June, a total of 109,286 offences.

Vehicle crime was down 22 per cent—the same as criminal damage. House burglaries fell 15 per cent, there was a drop of almost 14 per cent in violent crime.

Sexual offences were up eight per cent to 950 recorded crimes, and drug incidents rose three per cent.
