Council considers streetlights switch-off to save money

AN ACTION plan to save energy and cash could see streetlights switched off in the early hours.

Rotherham Borough Council has successfully trialled dimming lamps and is installing 8,500 energy efficient “white lights”.

Engineers are attending benchmarking groups to explore other technologies and ways of saving more energy.

Principal lighting engineer Allan Lewis said: “The pressures of the current financial climate and the need for the authority to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions has highlighted the need for all energy reduction measures to be explored.

“Substantial progress has been made in a number of areas.”

Reduced lighting levels were tested in four locations last year with no complaints. About 300 lamps a year will be converted, cutting annual bills by £5,000.
