Council backs Manvers waste plant

BARNSLEY Council has indicated that it is unlikely to object to plans for a controversial waste treatment plant in the Dearne Valley.

The site is part of the joint BDR waste management partnership involving councils in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, but Rotherham Borough Council will make the final planning decision.

The site, at Bolton Road, Manvers, will process up to 200,000 tons of household waste a year.

A report by planning officers at Barnsley Council said: “In terms of the impact on the amenity of residents through noise or air pollution, this has been fully assessed and there are no objections on this basis.

“It is recommended that it be communicated to Rotherham Council that Barnsley Council has no objections to the proposal.”

The £77 million waste treatment facility is being proposed by 3SE, a partnership between Shanks Waste Solutions and Scottish and Southern Energy.

Residents in  Bolton-upon-Dearne and Mexborough oppose the plans, claiming that increased traffic and bad smells could blight the area.
