Cllr Sarah Allen, RMBC’s cabinet member for cleaner, greener communities, said: “Boston Castle and Park is a fascinating part of Rotherham’s heritage, which brings to life the story of the Earl of Effingham, as well as the many people who lived in the castle and worked in the park and surrounding area over the years.

“Volunteering offers great opportunities for local residents to get involved at the castle and park, to meet people and learn new skills – if you think you could spare a few hours every week, we’d love to hear from you.

“If you’ve never visited before, why not come along and see what the castle and park have to offer? As well as exploring the castle, the Earl’s former hunting lodge, you can even take a roof tour and admire amazing long-distance views across Rotherham,” she added.

Boston Castle is located on Boston Castle Grove, off Moorgate, and was built as a hunting lodge by the Earl of Effingham and acquired the name Boston Castle to commemorate the Boston Tea Party.

By the early 19th Century the castle had become a small house. It was first occupied by local quarry owners and then from 1876 by the park keepers.

From the late 1950s, until 1996 it was occupied by the borough’s park staff and their familie

New for this season, the castle is currently displaying the work of local artist Eric Howsam.

Eric (85), of Brinsworth, took up painting as a hobby, when he retired from his job as a commercial artist in the 1980s. His art is mainly in acrylic or pen and ink and includes local scenes, 1920s style and nature.
