Conductor assaulted on Rotherham train

BRITISH Transport Police have issued this image of a woman who allegedly assaulted a female train conductor after being asked to extinguish her cigarette.

Efforts are underway to track down the woman who was reportedly travelling between Rotherham and Swinton at around 8pm on April 23 when the alleged attack on the Northern Rail employee occurred.

Pc Jeff Cole, investigating for BTP, said: “The conductor of the service requested that a female passenger who was smoking on the train extinguish her cigarette.

“When she challenged the woman she became aggressive and hurled verbal abuse at the conductor before allegedly pushing her several times.

“When a passenger on board the service attempted to intervene he too was subjected to verbal abuse by the female who also attempted to physically assault him.

“The female then alighted the train at Swinton railway station.”

Officers have released CCTV images of a woman in the hope that she might be identified and located.

Pc Cole added, “This was an unprovoked attack on a member of staff simply doing her job. The incident has left her very shocked.

“BTP will not tolerate assaults of any kind towards railway staff and we will do everything possible to track down the offenders and bring them to justice.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may recognise the woman pictured to contact police”

Richard Allan, Area Director, Northern Rail, said: “This is an extremely serious incident, resulting in a very troubling assault on one of our colleagues and a passenger.”
