Community spending rises in run-up to elections, says report

COUNCILLORS’ spending on community projects is highest in the few months before elections, according to a Rotherham Borough Council report.

Members splash around a third of the annual Communnity Leadership Fund budget in February and March, before the financial year ends and as voter campaigning begins.

The fund was introduced in 2003 to address local priorities and support grassroots groups.

According to each of the 63 councillors is allocated £1,000 per year. During February and March 2011 there was a total of £25,000 spent.

A spokesman said: “Historically, spend is very high during the last two months of the financial year.”
