Clegg criticises strike planned for eve of Olympics

A UNION’S planned 24-hour strike on the eve of the Olympics was blasted by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg when he visited Rotherham this morning.

Thousands of Home Office staff from the Public and Commercial Services union, including airport immigration employees, will walk out on July 26 over jobs, wages and other issues.

Mr Clegg said: “It’s the last thing that this country needs. We are about to put on one of the greatest shows in the world.

“PCS want to mess it all up for everyone else and I really hope they will listen to the public outcry and reconsider.”

The union, which also represents staff in the UK Border Agency and Criminal Records Bureau, says the Government is acting recklessly in cutting jobs and privatising services.

Mr Clegg was visiting Rotherham to launch a new £126 million scheme to get 16 to 18-year-olds in work or training. See next week’s Advertiser for the full story.
