Cigarette drop costs smoker £465

A carelessly discarded cigarette proved to be costly for one smoker, who was ordered to pay £465.

Lee Fisher was issued with a fixed penalty notice when a Rotherham warden spotted him throwing a cig end onto the McDonalds carpark at Cortonwood, Wath.

Fisher, of Silverdale Drive, Barnsley, was found guilty in his absence at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court for the February 22 offence of littering.

After the hearing on December 17 Cllr Jahangir Akhtar, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We hope that cases like this will act as a warning to anyone who drops litter in Rotherham, whether it be fly tipping or one cigarette end.

“Most people hate seeing litter because it blights local neighbourhoods and we hope that this case sends a clear message to anyone who drops any kind of litter to think again.”

Fisher was fined £150 and told to pay £300 costs plus an extra £15.
