Churches prepare to welcome visitors

ROTHERHAM’S Chapel on the Bridge is among four houses of worship open to visitors this weekend.

The Chapel of Our Lady on the Bridge, as it is officially known, will be welcoming visitors from 11am to 2pm on Saturday as part of the national Heritage Open Days project.

Wath Parish Church will have historical displays, photos and slideshows on show from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 2pm to 4pm on Sunday.

There will be music from a brass quintet and refreshments will be provided.

St Helen’s Church on Front Street in Treeton, which dates from 1175 is one of  Rotherham’s few Grade I-listed building and will be open for visitors to see its fine interior medieval stonework and carved woodwork, including green men and ceiling bosses, wonderful carved angels in the chancel and a carved 13thC effigy of a knight.

You can visit between 10am to 4pm Friday, 10am to 2pm on Saturday and 10am to 2pm on Sunday.

St Leonard’s Church in Thrybergh completes the quartet of openings from 10am to 4pm on Friday, the same times Saturday and from 11.30am to 4pm on Sunday.

The Saxon single cell church with chancel, tower, porch and vestry and 15th century stained glass windows is open to ten people at a time.
