Child rapist jailed for 15 years

Russell Callear (40), of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday (4) after being found guilty of ten sex offences.

Callear sexually abused the girl in Rotherham in the 1990s, when he was a teenager.

He was found guilty of four counts of rape, three of indecent assault and three of indecent activity with a child.

A jury returned a unanimous verdict on all ten counts following a five-day trial last month.

Mr Paul O’Shea, prosecuting, said during the trial Callear had committed a series of serious offences against the girl, which started out by touching.

He said the girl, who cannot be identified, did not speak about the abuse for many years.

Callear told the girl he was her “fairy godfather” and she should do what she was told.

South Yorkshire Police refused to release a custody photograph of Callear. A force spokeswoman said this was at the request of the victim.
