Charity boss drops in on fact-finding tour

THE CHIEF executive of a children’s charity visited Rotherham to see one of its projects first hand.

Dame Clare Tickell, of Action for Children, called in to Rotherham Bridges which provides support to young people in care aged between 16 and 21.

The aim is to provide a range of services and support networks to help care leavers as they enter adulthood.

Rotherham was hand-picked for a visit after a supported accommodation project in partnership with Rotherham Borough Council and Great Places housing association won an award.

Clare said: “I was delighted to visit Rotherham and meet some of the young care leavers we support.

“Many care leavers have faced difficult experiences and real uncertainty and upheaval at a very young age.

“Helping them find their feet with both practical and emotional support is really important so it was a real privilege to hear their stories and see the difference that we are able to make alongside our partners.”

At Rotherham Bridges, which is based off Hollowgate, in the town centre, staff work with young people to ensure that they have a plan ahead of their 16th birthday to map out their future and ensure they get the right support.

The plan includes areas of life such as health, family, social relationships, training and employment.

Rotherham Bridges also helps young people to set up home through budgeting plans, practical and domestic skills, advice about being a good neighbour and keeping safe.

It also offers supported and semi-supported lodgings and there are various activities run including football and volunteering opportunities.
