CCTV bid to trace Maltby firebugs

CCTV footage is being viewed in an attempt to identify arsonists who torched a car parked outside a pub.

Police have begun investigating the blaze which happened near to the Lumley Arms pub, off Tickhill Road, Maltby, at around 8.30pm on Sunday night.

Firefighters from nearby Maltby fire station attended the incident but the Renault Clio hatchback they extinguished in around 20 minutes was completely destroyed by the flames.

One firefighter said: “It was well alight when we got there. There was no way we could have saved the car.

“We couldn’t be sure how the fire started. We left the investigation in the hands of the police.”

Police are now investigating the incident and have issued an appeal for witnesses.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police are currently investigating this incident. It appears that the car was deliberately set alight.

“CCTV footage is currently being viewed to identify any possible suspects.

“Anyone who witnessed what happened or has information in connection to this crime can contact Wentworth Valley Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01709 832709.”
