Calls for speed limit cuts on death crash road

FRESH calls have been made to cut the speed limit on a stretch of road where five teenagers died in an horrific car crash.

The friends lost their lives last month after the blue Toyota Corolla in which they were travelling was in collision with a grey Seat Leon on the A630 Doncaster Road in Conisbrough.

Four of the teenagers – Blake Cairns (16), Arpad Kore (18), Jordanna Goodwin (16) and Megan Storey (16), all from Doncaster – attended Danum Academy, while Bartosz Bortniczak (18) had left but maintained close links with the school.

The driver of a black Vauxhall Corsa was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail.

The 45-year-old Mexborough man driving the Seat suffered a broken leg.

Since the accident there have been calls for speed reductions on the stretch of road and people attending a Parents and Children Together (PACT) meeting at the Ivanhoe Centre in Conisbrough have voiced their support.

The A630 between Conisbrough and Warmsworth has now been the scene of three fatal accidents since 2007, with nine deaths, and two other motorists have died in crashes on the stretch of the A630 in Conisbrough itself in the past two years.

Cllr Sandra Holland, who represents Conisbrough and Denaby on Doncaster Council, said that a range of views were expressed at the PACT meeting with the majority suggesting a reduction in the 30mph and 40mph speed limits along the stretch where the accident happened.

Cllr Holland said that a police investigation into the accident was ongoing and people would have to await the findings, but there had been a call for a review of safety by councillors and local people.
