Breast cancer alert for over-70s

OLDER women in Rotherham are being warned not to ignore symptoms of breast cancer.

New figures show that roughly a third of the borough’s women diagnosed with the disease are aged over 70.

NHS Rotherham working with the North Trent Cancer Network has issued the reminder as part of a new campaign intended to encourage earlier diagnosis through raising awareness of signs and symptoms.

Women over 70 are not routinely called for mammograms, but can request one.

The risk of breast cancer increases with age but the earlier it is detected the better the chances of successful treatment and a longer, healthier life.

GPs, pharmacists and other groups in Rotherham are backing the project by displaying posters and giving away special packs outlining common signs, which include a lump or changes to the skin or nipple.

Rotherham Advice and Information Network have been leading a project to raise awareness of breast cancer symptoms in older women, over the last few weeks.

They have engaged with many women aged over 70 who live in the borough to explain signs and symptoms of breast cancer and encourage earlier diagnosis.

Groups using the Rotherham Advice and Information Network Building in the town centre—including the Rotherham Pensioners’ Action Group and Carers 4Carers—are also aiming to roll the campaign out in other areas of the borough, including Treeton, Brinsworth and Catcliffe.
