Breakfast bonus for biking kids

YOUNGSTERS at a Rotherham primary will be biking to school for their breakfast on Wednesday.

Children and parents arriving at Anston Greenland J&I School who arrive by bike will get a healthy bike breakfast, entry into a prize draw and a free bike health check and service from Dr Bike, all organised by charity Sustrans.

Sustrans is working with schools in Rotherham to provide children with the skills and information necessary to allow them to take to two wheels for the journey to school on a regular basis.

Natalie Whelan from Sustrans, said: "Walking and cycling to school is a great way for our children to get the exercise they need everyday to keep healthy, and research shows it allows them to become better students in the classroom.  And let's not forget its fun, too."

Anne Jones, Head teacher at Anston Greenland's School, said: "It's great to see so many children getting active on the journey to school. By cycling to school, children are not only keeping fit and healthy but also helping the environment - something our school is very passionate about.  It's great to be working with Sustrans, and great to be a 'Bike It' School."

Dr John Radford, NHS Director of Public Health in Rotherham, said he was delighted to see the project launched in Rotherham. He said: "Cycling is a fantastic way for children and their families to be physically active. It is highly sustainable and it has great long term health benefits."

This event is one of many that will be taking place at schools across Rotherham, encouraging cycling to school. Sustrans works in Rotherham thanks to funding from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan.
